On this device

Game progress, settings, notes, a stock of puzzles for offline play, and your statistics stay on the device, in the browser storage that the app uses. Statistics are the games you finish: difficulty, time, mistakes, hints, the result, and which puzzle it was. That history is not uploaded. A finished catalog game is also sent for the leaderboard, as the next section describes.

Leaderboard

When you finish a catalog game, the app sends that result so the game list can show your best time and the best time from any player. A random id stored on this device stands in for an account. You can set a short nickname, up to 16 characters. If you do not, the list uses a default such as Player 4821. There is no email address and no sign-in.

A finished catalog game sends the puzzle id, your time, your mistakes, how many hints you used, the play style (Standard, Traditional, or Learner), the anonymous id, the nickname (or the default), and the finished board. Times are ranked within that style, so a Traditional or Learner finish is not mixed with a Standard best. The server checks that the board matches the puzzle and that the time is not impossibly short, then discards the board. It does not keep the finished grid. Games solved with a hint are stored so the attempt is not mistaken for a clean best, but they are not ranked and they do not set a best time. Only a win with no hints can earn a place. The top three clean times on a game are marked gold, silver, and bronze.

If the device is offline, the result waits on the device and is sent when a connection returns. The game list keeps the last best times it loaded.

On our server

Lesson walkthroughs are saved when the device is online, under the same random id, so a lesson can continue. That id is not your name. The Statistics history stays on the device. Catalog wins for the leaderboard are uploaded as described above. If this device already had play records on the server, the app copies them onto the device once. Older play records, lesson rows, and leaderboard rows may still be on the server until you ask us to delete them. None of them are linked to an account.
